Specialized Manual Transmission Repair in Tallinn

A manual gearbox may be mechanically simpler than an automatic, but it still needs accurate diagnosis and correct rebuild procedures. Crunching into gear, noisy bearings, oil leaks and clutch issues quickly make the car unpleasant and expensive to drive.

Mr.Car repairs 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions, clutch systems and selected transfer cases. We identify the real source of the fault, explain what is worn and repair only what genuinely needs to be repaired.

Why you should not ignore crunching, vibration or hard shifting
A crunching gear is often the beginning of synchro failure. Metal debris then circulates inside the gearbox and damages gears and bearings. Early intervention is always cheaper than a full rebuild.

Main symptoms of manual gearbox failure

Crunching into gear
The clearest sign of worn synchros or damaged engagement teeth.
Gear pops out
Usually caused by worn selector forks, detents or damaged gears.
Hard shifting
The lever feels stiff, notchy or refuses to engage a gear cleanly.
Whine or growl
Often points to bearing wear or low or contaminated oil.
Clutch pedal vibration
May indicate uneven clutch wear, a release bearing issue or flywheel wear.
Oil leaks
Seal leaks quickly lower the oil level and accelerate internal damage.

What happens if you ignore a manual transmission fault?

1
Early warning

Crunching in one gear or slight bearing noise. Often repairable without a full rebuild.

2
Damage spreads

Metal debris contaminates the oil and starts damaging other gears, bearings and selectors.

3
Major failure

Gears refuse to engage or pop out constantly. The gearbox has to be removed, dismantled and rebuilt.

Types of manual gearboxes we repair

5-speed manuals
The most common format in Estonia. Typical issues include worn 2nd and 3rd gear synchros, noisy input shaft bearings and leaking seals.

6-speed manuals
Tighter internal packaging and higher torque loads require careful defect inspection and correct setup tolerances.

Transfer cases
We also diagnose and repair transfer cases with chain, bearing and engagement issues on AWD vehicles.

Manual gearbox diagnostics — the correct first step

Not every noise comes from the gearbox itself. Proper diagnosis prevents unnecessary removal and saves budget.

  • Test drive to isolate the fault by speed, load and selected gear
  • Underbody inspection for leaks, mount condition and linkage issues
  • Clutch operation check, release system inspection and oil level verification
  • If needed, dismantling and defect inspection before quoting

Frequently asked questions about manual transmission repair

How is manual transmission repair different from automatic transmission repair?
A manual gearbox is mechanically simpler and has no torque converter, valve body or mechatronics. Most failures involve synchros, bearings, seals and clutch components.
How often should manual transmission oil be changed?
Usually every 60,000 to 80,000 km, depending on use and manufacturer guidance.
Can I keep driving if the gearbox crunches?
It is not recommended. Crunching means the synchronizer is no longer doing its job and further driving can damage gears and bearings.
How much does clutch replacement cost?
Clutch kit replacement starts from about 300€ including labour. The final estimate depends on the vehicle model and parts.
How long does a manual gearbox repair take?
Oil service usually takes around an hour. Clutch replacement takes 1 to 2 days. Synchro and bearing work often takes 2 to 5 days.
Why does a gear pop out while driving?
The usual causes are worn selectors, detents or damaged gears. The gearbox should be inspected before the damage spreads further.
Does a manual gearbox need software adaptation after repair?
No. A classic manual gearbox is a mechanical unit without transmission software adaptation.
Which manual gearboxes do you repair?
We commonly repair VW, BMW, Getrag, Toyota, Honda, Ford and other widely used manual transmissions.
Suspect a problem with the manual gearbox?
Do not wait until the gearbox refuses to engage gears. Book diagnostics now, and if you need an automatic transmission specialist, see our automatic transmission repair page →
