Some engine symptoms need immediate attention

A flashing engine warning light, overheating, low oil pressure or a pronounced metallic knock can indicate a serious fault. Stop the engine when it is safe to do so and seek advice rather than risking further damage by continuing to drive.

When to book an engine diagnostic

The engine warning light is on

If the light is flashing or the engine is running roughly, have the vehicle checked promptly. The cause may lie in the ignition or fuel system, a sensor fault or the engine’s mechanical condition.

The engine is overheating

A rising temperature gauge, coolant loss or a cooling fan that runs unusually often calls for checks of the cooling system, head gasket and cylinder head.

Oil consumption or low oil pressure

Frequent top-ups, visible leaks or an oil-pressure warning may point to failed seals or gaskets, lubrication problems or internal engine wear.

Misfire, vibration or rough running

Knocking, rattling or timing-drive noise

A new noise on start-up or at idle should not be dismissed as a characteristic of the engine. It is safer to inspect the timing drive, valve train and ancillary components before damage occurs.

What should I do if the engine warning light comes on?
If the light is flashing, the engine is misfiring or the car has lost power, arrange a diagnostic promptly and avoid unnecessary driving. The cause may be a sensor, but it may also involve the ignition, fuel system or an internal mechanical fault.
Can I keep driving if the engine is overheating?
If the temperature continues to rise, especially when a red warning appears, stop safely and switch the engine off. Continuing to drive can quickly damage the head gasket, cylinder head and cooling system.

Why city use can be hard on an engine

Short journeys, repeated cold starts, traffic and limited motorway running can be more demanding than the mileage suggests. The engine oil spends less time at full operating temperature, while the intake and exhaust systems often work in less favourable conditions.

If most journeys are made around town, service intervals should reflect the way the car is actually used rather than only the longest interval shown in the maintenance schedule.
